Buzz Aldrin sells the famous pen that helped launch Apollo from the Moon

A dry and molded black plastic pen sold for $857,600 at Sotheby’s auction on Wednesday.

Which would have been pure rubbish he ordered the highest requests because of where these two things were 57 years ago—the takeoff of NASA’s Apollo 11 spacecraft on the first human mission to land astronauts on the Moon. More than guesses and ends, one was the problem that almost killed Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin on the surface, and the other was the simple way to save the mission.

“Houston, Tranquility. Do you have a way to show the configuration of the arm crusher engine?” announced Aldrin to Mission Control after realizing that he or Armstrong had inadvertently broken the top of the connecting link that would have ignited their ascent engine, beginning the journey back to Earth. “The reason I’m asking is because the end looks like it’s going to be broken. I think we can push it again. I’m not sure we can pull it off if we push it in, though.”
