Morocco coach Mohamed Webb has revealed a serious contingency plan to deal with the possibility of defender Naif Akrad’s injury resuming, stressing that Marwan Saadan will be ready as a replacement if the Marseille player misses the 2026 World Cup finals.
Thoughtful tactical precautions
During tonight’s press conference to announce the final roster, Webb explained that the coaching staff considered all possible scenarios, especially with Akrad’s history of repeated injuries in recent months, noting that Saadan is an ideal backup option to fill any potential gaps in the defensive line.
Tactical reasons
In response to inquiries about Sofiane Boufal’s absence from the final squad, the national coach confirmed that the decision was not related to the level of the player, but rather to the team’s tactical needs.
“Buffal had a good camp but his non-selection is because we need the profile of a winger who plays on the wings, whereas Buffal is more of an attacking player,” stressing that the final selection was based on the tactical qualities required in the squad.
Physical stress is a collective challenge
Webb denied that the physical aspect was a particular concern for the Moroccan national team, stressing that all participating teams will face the same challenge in light of the pressure of back-to-back matches and the high tempo of the competition.
He added: “Physical problems will be for everyone, not just us. We have a specialized and important team that has worked hard on this aspect,” noting that preparation is not limited to physical fitness but also includes how to deal with the pressures of international competition.
The mental aspect… the hidden weapon
The 51-year-old coach stressed that mental strength is one of the most important weapons that the technical staff is betting on at the current stage, considering that a player with a strong personality and concentration can overcome the most difficult moments inside the green rectangle.
Webb emphasized that the technical staff works with a precise and integrated program that combines physical, technical and psychological preparation with the aim of presenting the players in the best possible way during the upcoming global forum.
It is noteworthy that the Moroccan national team will face Madagascar and Norway in two friendlies before the start of the World Cup against Brazil on June 13.
