Newcastle captain Bruno Guimaraes has told the club he wants to join Arsenal, it has been confirmed. Sky Sports News.

Newcastle are not commenting on the situation Sky Sports News Arsenal have not contacted them regarding the midfielder’s availability.

However, it is understood that terms of a deal with the 28-year-old have been explored through mediators.

Guimaraes has two years remaining on his Newcastle contract, with a one-year option to extend in the summer of 2029.

Newcastle have no interest in selling the Brazilian international.

Their stance has been consistent all summer – they insist their captain is not for sale and they welcome no bids.

Could Guimaraes become the latest key player to leave Toon?

Guimaraes, who joined Newcastle from Lyon for £35m in January 2022, has been one of the key players in the club’s return to prominence after their Saudi-backed owners completed the takeover in October 2021.

However, Newcastle do not want to see star forwards Alexander Isak and Anthony Gordon and fellow midfielder Sandro Tonali out the door following their captain.

Guimaraes, who missed a penalty as Brazil crashed out of the World Cup against Norway in the last 16, has established himself as a huge crowd favorite and the man who lifted the club’s first domestic trophy in 70 years when he led them to Carabao Cup glory two seasons ago.

Toon boss Eddie Howe will be desperate to keep hold of one of his most important players and will not want a repeat of the saga that forced Isak to make a £130m switch to Liverpool after he went on strike last summer.

Sales of Gordon to Barcelona (£69.3m) and Tonali to Tottenham (£100m) totaling £169.3m have significantly boosted Newcastle’s ability to meet spending rules, but another high-profile departure will spark another major rebuilding project.

Howe’s side suffered last season after attempts to replace Issac hampered them in a disappointing domestic campaign that eventually saw them finish 12th in the Premier League table.

“But Bruno Guimaraes, either himself or through an agent dealing with his future, has indicated a desire to leave Newcastle United.

“Looking at some of the Newcastle players who have left recently; last week Sandro Tonali joined Tottenham Hotspur for £100m and will double his wages at the same time.

“Bruno Guimarães then, without saying a word, will probably sit there and think, ‘Well, when will it be my turn and double my salary and give myself a chance to win the league title?’

“So it’s a massive shock for Newcastle fans.

“He has two years left on his contract, with an option for a third, but as far as I understand, Newcastle have absolutely no interest in selling him this window.

“Their position has always been the same – that he is not for sale.”
