Old Trafford witnessed a night full of stories and touching moments, from a new captain’s record, an emotional farewell to one of the stars of the midfield, to a goal that sparked a major refereeing controversy in Manchester United’s 3-2 win over Nottingham Forest in the Premier League matchday 37.
Bruno Fernandes stole the show after scoring the third goal for teammate Brian Mbwemo in the 76th minute to reach his 20th Premier League goal of the season, equaling Kevin De Bruyne and Thierry Henry’s all-time record as the top scorers in a Premier League season.
The win took United to 68 points in third place, ahead of 16th-placed Nottingham’s 43 points.
United came into the game strongly, opening the scoring early through Luke Shaw in the fifth minute, before Nottingham came back in the second half to equalize through Morato.
But the most controversial strike came in United’s second lead when Mathews Cunha followed the rebound into the net amid fierce protests from Nottingham’s players when Brian Mbwemu got a hand to the ball early in the attack.
The video technology actually intervened to review the kick before the referee decided to award the goal, and the decision caused a huge controversy in the stadium.
Bruno made the difference again in the 76th minute after a superb through ball to Mbwemo, who scored United’s third, before Morgan Gibbs-White reduced Nottingham’s lead in the dying minutes.
The match also saw a touching moment when Casemiro came off in the 81st minute to a standing ovation from the Old Trafford crowd in his final appearance at United’s stadium before his impending exit at the end of the season.
The Brazilian star gave a strong farewell performance before leaving Mason Mountain to a standing ovation from the fans and his teammates on the field.
