Britney Spears was called California Thursday with driving under the influence of alcohol, authorities said.
The 44-year-old singer is charged with misdemeanor counts of driving under the influence of alcohol and one count of drugs, the Ventura County District Attorney’s Office said.
An email sent to Spears’ representative seeking comment was not immediately returned.
The criminal complaint does not say what type of alcohol or drugs, or how much, Spears is alleged to have consumed.
Spears, who entered drug treatment, was arrested on March 4 after being pulled over for driving her black BMW too fast and erratically on US 101 near her home, California the traffic officer said. He appeared to be impaired and failed several sobriety tests, after which he was arrested for driving under the influence of alcohol and drugs and taken to the Ventura County Jail, the CHP said.
He was released on bail the next day. The police completed their investigation and handed it over to prosecutors on March 23.
A representative at the time called Spears’ claim “absolutely unwarranted” and said it would be “the first step in a long-term change that needs to happen in Britney’s life”.
Spears voluntarily checked into a drug facility about a month after her arrest, her rep said.
Spears’ argument is set for Monday. Because it is a misdemeanor charge, he will not be required to appear in court, prosecutors said.
The former teen star and Mickey Mouse Club alumni rose to fame in the 1990s and 2000s with hit singles such as Toxic, Gimme More and I’m a Slave 4 U. Most of his albums have been certified platinum, according to the Recording Industry Association of America, with 19 diamond titles for One Time00: Oops! … I did it again.
Spears became part of the spotlight in the early 2000s, and a source of public attention, as she struggled with mental illness and the paparazzi documented much of her private life.
In 2008, Spears was placed under a court-ordered guardianship, controlled by her father and attorneys, who would control her personal and financial decisions for more than a decade. It was canceled in 2021.
Since then, she has been married and divorced, and released a wonderful, tell-all book, The Woman in Me.
He has retired as a recording artist in recent years, releasing only a handful of singles since his last album in 2016.
