British couple return to village after deadly Spanish wildfires

The local authorities did not issue an alarm earlier on Thursday night because the problem may have reached people beyond the affected area and may complicate the evacuation.

Officials said police were going door-to-door or calling residents with instructions on how to safely shelter or evacuate.

The Andalusian regional government and Spain’s civil protection police did not immediately respond to requests for comment.

Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez will visit the ruins of Los Gallardos, home to many expatriates, on Monday.

Among those caught in the fire was an English couple. Heavily burned and semi-conscious valleys were foundlocal media reported.

The couple are believed to have been on a hike as the fire spread rapidly across the state on Thursday. They were evacuated and taken to the hospital where they are under intensive care.
