Andre Zeglartz says his job is now to win more titles with Manchester City after they completed a domestic double with victory over Brighton in the Women’s FA Cup final.
In his first season at the club, Zeglartz won two trophies after many years away from Man City. They last won a league and FA Cup in 2016 and haven’t won the competition overall since 2020.
There have been other League Cup wins since then, but this year has put the club firmly back at the top after Chelsea’s dominance.
The question now will be whether they can sustain it – and that’s exactly what Zeglertz is aiming to do.
talking TNT Sports After the 4-0 win over Brighton at Wembley, he said: “It’s one thing to build a team that can win the title once and the FA Cup once, but there’s something about creating a winning culture where we’re winners now, what does that mean? How do we keep pushing and striving for more?
“That will be my job now, to make sure we are looking for more, we are coming in with confidence, but at the same time we have to work harder next year.
“We have to train more, we have to work harder in every training session, we have to be better at many things because defending a title is more difficult than winning a title… I’m looking forward to it.”
Brighton were playing in their first major final and the underdogs headlined the game. They gave themselves high hopes with a dominant opening 35 minutes, but once Man City clicked, there was no going back.
Goals from Khadijah Bani Shaw and Alex Greenwood led them 2-0 at the break, with second-half tries from Aoba Fujino and Vivienne Miadema completing the win.
Zeglertz added on the game itself: “We struggled a lot in the first half, but there’s something about this team. We have a lot of individual qualities and that’s what gave us the chance to win the game.
“That’s about it. We can focus a lot on the build-up and possession, but it’s what you do in the penalty area that wins the league for us.
“I think we struggled in our own build-up, we didn’t have what we were supposed to do. I was a bit upset at half-time because that’s the only thing we can ask. We can make mistakes, but if we don’t do what we agreed beforehand, we will struggle.
“We did a lot better in the second half, with Alex’s position, Caroline’s position, Aoba coming in. A big difference in the starting position.”
Shaw was back in the spotlight on Sunday, though Monday’s title celebrations put any questions to his future when He announced to the crowd that he had signed a new Man City contract.
The Jamaica international was heavily linked with a move to Chelsea, but sealed a new long-term deal with another match-winning turn at Wembley.
said the girl TNT Sports: “It’s been a crazy few weeks. So many emotions. From not knowing where I’d be, to signing a contract, being here, to winning the FA Cup. The last time I was at Wembley, I lost, so I wanted to make amends today and we did that.
“It’s been a long few months, a whole lot of different emotions, but I always said I wanted to be here. If I’m honest, it was very difficult, but in the end we did it and I’m happy about it.”
“It’s a big credit to him that he thinks our program will make him better and that he can win titles, but also to the club for being able to make it happen,” Zeglartz added of his striker.
“It’s been a long process and they’ve been working very hard to get it on paper. It was a great thing that they made it before this game, but also before everyone left (for the summer).”
Analysis from Sky Sports’ Charlotte Marsh at Wembley:
“The short answer is yes, of course they can. Man City have been a dominant force in domestic football this season, reinvigorated under Zeglertz who has proven himself to be an elite coach.
“Did Man City play their best football on Sunday? No, but they proved they can win in challenging situations and on the biggest stage, which is key to being champions.
“At the center of it was Shaw. Once he started seeing the ball and linking up the play with his teammates, they were unstoppable and, unlike Brighton, took advantage when they came.
“But credit also to the likes of Jade Rose and Greenwood in defence. The Canada international in particular made some key blocks in the opening 35 minutes which helped Man City to victory.
“There will be more evolution over the summer, as any good team does. They will want to add more organization, not just replacing Laura Combs and Laila Wahabi, but providing more competition across the board.
“They will be back in Europe and, importantly, will not have to play any qualifiers due to going straight into the league stage. This will add a new roster of fixtures and a new challenge for Zeglartz to navigate.
“But if he can keep key players fit and in form, there’s no reason why Man City can’t continue to compete on multiple fronts. It won’t be easy, but when has success ever been easy?”
