India said on Friday that “there were different views among some members” regarding the conflict in the Middle East.
Iran’s Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi on Thursday he encouraged BRICS member countries to condemn what they called “violation of international law by the United States and Israel”.
The war has heightened tensions between Iran and neighboring Gulf states, including Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates, a fellow BRICS+ member. Riyadh did not join the bloc.
Without specifically mentioning the UAE, Araghchi told a press conference that the BRICS member has blocked parts of India’s claims. Iran has repeatedly targeted its Gulf neighbor after the escalation of hostilities on February 28, reportedly hitting the UAE more than any other country involved in the conflict, including Israel.
“We don’t have a problem with any country, they have not been our target in today’s war. We only hit American military bases and American weapons, which unfortunately are on their territory,” said Araghchi.
The representative of the UAE, Minister of State, Khalifa bin Shaheen Al Marar, rejected Araghchi’s statement, accusing him of trying to justify “terrorist” attacks against the UAE and other Gulf countries. Al Marar said Iran had launched about 3,000 attacks on the UAE using missiles, cruise missiles and drones.
India’s statement highlighted areas of common ground among BRICS members, including calls for reform in global governing bodies, such as the United Nations and the Security Council. The organization reiterated its long-standing need for the countries of the Global South to be more prominent in international organizations, demonstrating their commitment to a global order.
Foreign ministers also discussed Israel’s deadly war in Gaza. They agreed that Gaza is an “inalienable part” of any independent Palestinian state, and emphasized the need to unite the region with the West Bank under the control of the Palestinian Authority. However, the statement indicated that another unnamed country expressed doubts about some aspects of the Gaza Strip.
The group also called on all parties to respect the ceasefire in Lebanon, which the opposition says is a ceasefire in name only. Without singling out a specific country, the ministers rejected the use of economic sanctions as a coercive measure.
Sudan was also on the agenda. Africa is still in the grip of what the UN says is the worst in the world human problems. Ministers called for an end to the war, saying that the only way to end the civil war, which started more than three years ago, is through dialogue. They also warned that Sudan could become a breeding ground for what ministers called “treason” and “terrorism”.
Also discussed was the situation in Syria, which is returning to the civil war that ended in December 2024 after the overthrow of the former ruler. Bashar al-Assad.
Voice of India calls for a peaceful and inclusive political transition. The parties also emphasized the need to remove what they called “foreign terrorists” from Syria, saying they pose a security threat to the country and the region as a whole.
