The final stages of McCullum’s tenure were marred by off-field issues. during the winter, Harry Brooke, Jacob Bethel, Josh language and Ben Duckett All took part in the night’s events.
After England won the first Test of the winter against New Zealand, the series was in tatters. Stokes and Gus Atkinson broke the team’s midnight curfew and being present when a member of security staff was punched by a Saracens rugby player.
And McCullum accepted responsibility for what happened on and off the field.
“I was the leader of that team. I led the team in terms of culture, the team in tactics, and the team in terms of results,” McClum said.
“If you don’t get the results, being a results business, basically you get replaced. I’m not unusual for that, I’ve been in this game for 20-odd years and if you don’t get the results, I know someone else needs a chance.
“I put my hand up for that and admitted it wasn’t enough.”
Both McCullum and Stokes have previously denied growing apart during the Ashes series, and McCullum said he had heard from the all-rounder since the news of his exit from the Test role emerged.
“I’ve had some great messages from Stokes,” McCullum said. “I think, in a romantic way, there’s something about Stocksy and I going out together. We started it together and we’re going out together, and I have no problem with that.”
England’s search for a new Test coach is under way, with Gould saying on Sunday that a new captain will be appointed before the finalisation.
Gould has suggested a split captaincy, possibly white-ball captain Brooke, while also hinting that the Test vice-captain will not be able to lead in all formats.
Brooke and McCullum have formed a strong bond working together with the white-ball teams, and England’s T20 team is at the top of the world rankings.
It raises the question of whether that partnership will end if the 27-year-old Brook takes over the Test side.
“You know my thoughts on Harry, my love for him as a player, a person and a leader,” McCullum said.
“He’s got one of the best tactical minds I’ve ever seen in a relatively young man. He’s developing at an amazing pace as a leader. I love working with Harry and I want to continue to do so.
“There will be a lot of strong discussions throughout. Myself with the white ball and whoever takes over with the red ball, ultimately there will be an agreement between all three teams because we want what’s best for England cricket.”
McCullum has previous experience working in an environment where coaching responsibilities are shared. Matthew Mott was the test coach after leading the whiteball teams for two years. In the year When Death was dismissed in 2024, McCullum took overall control.
A busy schedule lends itself to splitting coaching duties, but it can also cause a team to be sidelined in order to find multi-format players.
McCullum will now have to form a working relationship with the new Test coach.
Former England coach Andy Flower is a possible candidate, while McCullum’s former New Zealand teammate Stephen Fleming is highly regarded and has left Indian Premier League club Chennai Super Kings.
Former England batsman Jonathan Trott has international experience with Afghanistan, while Glamorgan coach Richard Dawson is seen as a domestic contender.
“Once the Test coach is in the post, we will work collaboratively to do what is right for all three formats and English cricket,” McCullum said.
“I expect it to be tough, but I hope it will be a profitable conversation for everyone. Basically, we need to find the right thing for English cricket. That will be the number one motivation.”
England, under McCullum, will begin a three-match one-day series against India at Edgbaston on Tuesday.
Jos Buttler will play his 200th ODI for England, while the tourists can call on the likes of Virat Kohli, Rohit Sharma and Jasprit Bumrah.
