Michael Arteta says he will be the “biggest” Bournemouth fan on Tuesday night – with his Arsenal side now on the brink of winning the Premier League title.
The Gunners won 1-0 against Burnley Monday Night Football Arteta means Arsenal will be champions if Manchester City fail to win at Bournemouth, live on Sky Sports.
In City’s way is Bournemouth head coach and childhood friend of Arteta’s Andoni Iraola – who grew up and played in the same youth team as the Arsenal manager in the Basque Country.
And after City boss Pep Guardiola backed West Ham against Arsenal last week, Arteta showed his support for Bournemouth, who are currently on a 16-game unbeaten run, the longest of its kind in Europe’s top five leagues.
“The biggest ever!” He’s going to be a Bournemouth fan on Tuesday if Arteta says so.
“For Andoni, and all the players and all the Bournemouth supporters, I think we all (Bournemouth fans) because we know what it means when they get a result.”
Asked if he would send any messages or advice to Errola, Arteta said: “I don’t think it’s necessary.
“What he has done at the football club, the transformation, what they are playing for, I don’t think they need anything else.
“When you see how Burnley played today, the spirit they showed, how hard they made it, imagine (Bournemouth).”
Arteta admits he won’t be watching the game with the Arsenal players tomorrow, but will watch it at home while spending the evening with family
“I don’t know how long I’m going to see this,” he said. “I’ll be there in front of the TV but I don’t know how much I’ll be able to watch it, that’s the reality.”
Arteta’s Arsenal had another nervy night at the Emirates. Kai Havertz put Arsenal in front on the stroke of half-time – but the German forward then avoided a red card for a high challenge on Leslie Ugochukwu.
“Well I was definitely worried when they were checking it,” Arteta said of the call. “When I looked at the bench they said it wasn’t, but I didn’t look at the action.”
Arsenal recorded their eighth 1-0 win of the Premier League season – ‘one nil to the Arsenal’ the second-most common scoreline in the top-flight this term.
Asked how he manages the nerves, Arteta replied: “I don’t know. I thought that the amount of hair I had, would never go away. But I think this job is going to test it to the limit.”
Sky Sports’ Sam Blitz at the Emirates Stadium:
This is a match that sums up Arsenal’s entire Premier League season. Set-piece goals, clean sheets, a little nervy. But they came out with victory.
Now they have Manchester City where they want them. On Tuesday night, Arsenal will be at home to see if Pep Guardiola can break Europe’s longest unbeaten run at Bournemouth. Andoni Iraola’s side are unbeaten in their last 16 – before his final home game in charge of the Cherries.
What a difference a month makes to Arsenal.
On 19 April they were defeated by Manchester City. Erling Haaland was in a mood to sing about City’s title chances – and City fans unfurled a banner called ‘Panic on the Streets of London’.
On May 19, they could be champions.
Arsenal fans unveiled before the game, it’s actually ‘Party on the Streets of London’. Arsenal have not conceded a goal from open play since the City game. Defensive tenacity is set to get the Gunners over the line.
They are 180 minutes – or maybe just 90 – away from glory.
Gary Neville of Sky Sports:
“From Man City’s side, the result could hurt them because it’s only two games for them and one for Arsenal.
“They may go into tomorrow’s game feeling a bit disappointed with today’s result.”
Sky Sports’ Jamie Carragher on Arsenal’s last day’s game at Crystal Palace:
“You think about Aston Villa’s situation, if they win the Europa League and celebrate, what will they do against Man City?
“The last time Oliver Glasner was in a European final, before the game, four days ago, he only changed one player.
“Palace don’t have a huge squad, so if you go back to what Oliver Glasner has done in the past, he’s played pretty much a full-strength team.
“If Man City win tomorrow the nerves will really kick in for Arsenal this week. You saw tonight – it was a bit sharp.
“Being away from home can do them a little bit better. You can feel the excitement in the stadium.”
