Bolivian officials say there are no barriers after the state of emergency | Objections

The state of emergency authorizes the deployment of the military to support the police during five weeks of anti-government protests.

Bolivian officials say there are no roadblocks in the country, a day after President Rodrigo Paz emergency situation in response to weeks of protests.

Earlier on Sunday, the South American Parliament approved the Paz law, which prohibits “blocking roads, streets, roads and highways in ways that affect traffic and goods”.

The law also allowed the Bolivian army to help the police “establish order, reopen roads and protect the public”.

Signs of calm on Sunday coincided with several other incidents by protesters, who launched demonstrations calling for Paz to step down after implementing austerity measures that included cutting fuel subsidies earlier this year.

In Santa Cruz, authorities and protest leaders signed an agreement to end the wall in the town of San Julian.

A coalition of groups representing rural and indigenous people announced that they will stop the demonstrations in La Paz, while maintaining that they have not given up on their demands.

Five weeks of road closures have snarled traffic and choked off food, fuel and medicine in many areas.

Bolivia’s ombudsman’s office and human rights groups say at least 17 people have died, most of them related to the breakdown of medical care caused by the blockade.

Violent clashes between protesters and riot police have resulted in 365 arrests and 37 injuries, according to government officials.

Although the highway authorities in Bolivia have said that there is no blocking of protests on Sunday, they warned that many roads still need to be cleaned and repaired.

Although the situation appears to be improving, human rights observers have warned that a harsh response from a government that fails to address the problem that caused the crisis could escalate the unrest in the long run.

The police and the army are still working on Sunday.
