Body of missing boy, 15, found in Stalybridge Reservoir

The body of a 15-year-old boy was found in a reservoir.

Greater Manchester Police (GMP) said they were looking for the teenager at 18:30 BST on Saturday after receiving reports that he was in trouble at Cowbury Reservoir in Stalybridge, Tameside.

A spokesman for the force said the body had been found in the water this evening, adding that both formal identification had been carried out and the family had been informed.

The search continues for another boy in Greater Manchester. Police say he got into trouble in the River Irwell in Clifton Country Park, Salford.

GMP last saw the missing boy in Salford just before 5pm on Saturday.

A force spokeswoman said officers were called to reports of a child “in trouble”.

He added: “Emergency services and special search teams remain on the scene. The incident is ongoing.”

No further details about the boy, including his age, have been released.

Speaking about the discovery of the body in Tameside, Ch Insp Helen Baxter said: “It is nothing to be sad about and my thoughts are with the family and loved ones of the young boy who lost his life in such terrible circumstances.”

She added: “We are confident there are no suspicious circumstances and this is an unfortunate risk of entering open water.”

“We urge the public to please avoid the temptation of freezing in reservoirs, rivers, canals or ponds.

“We all want to enjoy the warm weather; please make sure you do so safely.”
