Tambling made his debut for the club in 1959 at the age of 17. He made 370 appearances for the Blues and played in the 1967 FA Cup Final, which Chelsea lost to Tottenham Hotspur.

He finished his playing career in Ireland, where he managed Cork Celtic and Cork City. He lived in Cork until his death.

In 2013, speaking after breaking Tambling’s scoring record, Lampard said: “Bobby and his wife have been a huge support for me, Kerry Dixon as well, two players I’ve managed to get past.

“Bobby is a perfect gentleman. I’m looking forward to sitting down for a beer or a glass of wine and having a proper chat with him for half an hour because he’s always supported me. I couldn’t have hit a better man.”
