Manchester City’s Premier League title hopes ended after Arsenal were crowned champions following a 1-1 draw at Bournemouth.
A first-half effort from Elie Junior Krupp helped the Gunners to their first Premier League title in 22 years, and despite Erling Haaland’s late leveller – it meant Pep Guardiola went without back-to-back league titles for the first time in his managerial career.
The result confirmed that Bournemouth will play European football next season, a feat achieved in head coach Andoni Iraola’s final home match in charge before his departure.
With Guardiola Expected to leave City after the seasonCity fans are still calling for him to stay away. They also sang: “We will fight to the end” – but Bournemouth confirmed there will be no fighting on Sunday’s final day.
City had a few half chances in the first half, with Jeremy Docu forcing Jorde Petrovic into a good save early on, but rarely troubled the Cherries.
At the other end, Evanilsson missed a brilliant chance from six yards out with the goal gap – only the offside flag saved his blushes.
Then came the big moment of the first half when Adrien Truffaut broke down the left and cut the ball to Cruppi, who found Gianluigi Donnarumma for the top corner and headed over from the spot.
Guardiola needed a response and it came almost seconds into the second half – but Petrovic managed to deny Nico O’Reilly when played through a City defender.
After City brought on Ryan Cherky, Phil Foden and Savinho in an attacking move, Bournemouth had more fun at the other end. Croupie curled over a good chance from the edge of the box, before Ryan hit the post from a corner.
But despite City’s pressure, Bournemouth looked likely to get a second as David Brooks missed two golden chances to seal the game – including hitting the post clean through.
Holland equalized after Rodri hit the post in the last minute. But the final whistle sparked jubilant scenes in the red half of Dorset and north London. It looks like it’s all Guardiola’s farewell bow in Sunday’s final against Aston Villa.
Man City manager Pep Guardiola:
“Elaborating on his reaction to his future in the post-match press conference, Guardiola added: “Listen, with the club, I always talk, but not now.
“The first thing you need to understand is that you should talk to my chairman first, right? And after that, we’ll decide when I talk to my chairman.
Asked if there would be talks after their final match of the season on Sunday, Guardiola said: “No, no, we’ll talk for the next few days.
“Always we talk to my chairman. What are we going to do, what are we not going to do. But I think he (the chairman) deserves (to talk to the first one), right?
As for whether Sunday’s match will be his last at City, he added: “Let me talk about my chairman! I know they (the supporters) love me a lot. I love them more. I know it’s the best place to be. I love that place (Etihad). I love it.
“Let me talk about my club. Even though people say I talk to a thousand million people in person, I’ve been incredibly, incredibly focused on my job. When we’re in competition, I’ve been there. I’ve been there. That’s what I have to do.”
Bournemouth head coach Andoni Irraola on Sky Sports:
“At the start of the season you don’t imagine (Europe). It’s been great and in the last game we have a chance to fight for the Champions League and we really deserve it, especially for the game we played so well. We didn’t win the game but that doesn’t matter.
“Today has been a good reflection of the club. I’m so happy for the club, the players, the supporters and the staff. It’s the best way to finish with something you can touch. I couldn’t ask for more.
“Pep is on top. He won everything. It was a tough game for them, they played with the excitement of a final three days ago. We forced them to play a tough game and they were obviously tired but they have this quality. It makes it even better when you play against an opponent when you play like this.
“We have a special group of players. They are consistent and always there. At the moment I don’t have anything on my mind about my future, I just want to celebrate and push it. We have the Europa League, then let’s maximize our options. Can we take the last Champions League place?
“I don’t know where I’m going yet but I’m in no rush, let’s finish on a high.”
Former Man City defender Micah Richards on Sky Sports:
“He is undoubtedly the greatest manager of his generation and I say that because of the way he plays football. There are certain ways you can win football matches.
“Arteta and Arsenal did it a bit more defensively. But in terms of his 10-year tenure at Man City, it’s the inverted full-backs, the false nine, playing (John) Stones in central midfield in the Champions League final, he’s developed a way to love the game and play it the right way.”
