Bluesky will be getting “villages,” which will serve as small spaces where you can “go deeper and hang out with people who care about the same things” sometime this year, according to head of product Alex Benzer. They will be built on the AT Protocol under Bluesky, which Benzer says is “a new system for everyone” that is part of the “Atmosphere” (abbreviation of the AT Protocol ecosystem).
Benzer wrote “a few ideas that we have in mind so far” in the thread. “On Bluesky, you’ll be able to create communities, join them, install them, and get updates,” Benzer says. “The most important thing about Bluesky is simplicity. The magic comes from places that are also available on the Internet. This means that you can change them and add more with Atmospheric software and tools.”
Communities will get a handle that “doubles as a link,” and when you go to that link, “you’ll be taken to the community’s home page,” according to Benzer. “Builders can also have regular events instead.” There will be three levels of community privacy: public, invite-only, and private. And every village will have its own food. Benzer says.
Benzer’s thread follows Bluesky COO Rose Wang say last week that the company wants to stop being a “public space” and that it was “strongly inspired by companies like Reddit.” Meta’s Threads are they are testing the shape of the areaswhen X announced in April that they will lock themselves in place of the local customs.
