The coach of the Saudi Arabian team, the Greek Giorgos Donis, has greatly adjusted the goalkeeper who will protect the “green” den during the confrontation with Uruguay in the 2026 World Cup.
The Saudi Arabian team will meet with its Uruguayan counterpartThe first round of Group H of the 2026 World Cup finals took place at the Hard Rock Stadium in Miami, USA, at dawn next Tuesday.
Saudi newspaper Al-Youm wrote that Donis decided to start the match with Mohamed Al-Owais in the goalkeeper position, despite Nawaf Al-Aqidi recovering from the injury that kept him out of the previous matches.
The newspaper explained that this choice is due to Al Owais’ participation in the last three friendly matches, which gives him a greater willingness to participate in the World Cup at the expense of Al Aqidi.
The technical staff also refuses to risk goalkeeper Nawaf Al-Aqidi, after he has been absent from the squad for the last three matches due to injury, fearing a recurrence of the injury at the World Cup.
Al-Aqidi was Saudi Arabia’s main goalkeeper during the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers, but his decline and repeated mistakes have returned Muhammad Al-Owais to the Greens’ roster since last March.
