Former England captain Ben Stokes scored a match-winning century in his first appearance for Durham after his international retirement.
Stokes scored an unbeaten 108 off 123 balls, hitting 10 boundaries and three sixes, and suffered cramp towards the end of his innings while chasing 257 to beat Derbyshire by five wickets in the Durham Metro Bank One-Day Cup.
It was Stokes’ 10th List A century, and first for Durham since 2014, less than a month after announcing his retirement from England duty during the series-final Test defeat to New Zealand at Trent Bridge.
Martin Anderson top-scored for Derbyshire in a total of 256-9 with 112, Stokes (0-38) going wicketless in his nine overs with the ball after electing to bat first.
He then came to the crease with Durham 24-2 in their ninth over, but a 50-run stand with Will Rhodes (45), Colin Ackerman (28) and Ollie Robinson (23) helped Durham push to their winning target.
When Stokes edged Nick Potts for four to reach his half-century, he subsequently received treatment on his left leg, with Durham later confirming the problem was cramp.
Although restricted, Stokes sealed the win with the first ball of the last over of the match, en route to a 116-ball century off two sixes off his former England teammate Shoaib Bashir (1-56).
