Ben Stokes is set to return to Durham in the One Day Cup on Tuesday.

Ben Stokes is set to play for Derbyshire on Tuesday for the first time since his retirement from international cricket.

The former England captain will be part of the opening round of matches where he will start his One Day Cup-hundred.

Stokes announced Sudden retirement from international cricket in England’s third Test against New Zealand last month.

Before that match, Stokes, 35, missed the second Test amid an investigation into an incident at a London nightclub.

During his time away from the England squad, the all-rounder played against Northamptonshire in the Durham County Championship.

Although Stokes says he developed “negative feelings” about playing for England, his time in county cricket rekindled his passion for the game.

“When I came back to Durham, not playing in the second Test, I got a new lease of life for the game, but unfortunately I couldn’t get that feeling back,” Stokes said.

“I’m really excited about the next part of what I’m doing. I’m comparing this week to that week when I go back to playing at my boyhood club Durham – I’m buzzing now.”

“But this week there were some very difficult moments and it adds up to everything and makes it clear that I made the right decision.”

After playing in the One Day Cup, Stoke could be involved in the Championship before the end of the season.

The timing of his return is meant to coincide with the launch of the renewed Centennial Edition.

This is the first season since shares in the eight franchises were sold to investors for £520m, with new team names, branding and players receiving additional income.

Stokes did not enter the bid and was scheduled to play in the One Day Cup for Durham before announcing his retirement.

Depending on the turnout, Stokes, perhaps the top-ranked cricketer in the country, could play in some intimate venues.

Durham have home games at South Northumberland Cricket Club in Gosforth and Darlington CC. Your trip to Yorkshire is on York CC.

Stokes has not played any 50-over cricket since the 2023 World Cup, the last limited-overs game for England.

The derby will be Stoke’s first one-day appearance for Durham in 12 years.

His 50-over knock for Durham in the 2014 One Day Cup final was against Warwickshire. The 23-year-old then made 164 in the semi-final against Nottinghamshire.

Stokes’ last domestic 50-over cricket was in New Zealand for Canterbury in 2017 when he missed England’s Ashes tour of Australia after an incident outside a Bristol nightclub.

Brendon McCullum has been sacked as England’s Test coach since Stokes retired from international cricket.

McCullum said he had received “lovely messages” from Stokes since the announcement.
