Ben Stokes: ECB not to take any action from ICC on all-round retirement video

England will face no action from the International Cricket Council (ICC) over Ben Stokes’ retirement video.

The ICC has written to the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) regarding a video of former England captain Stokes speaking to his teammates. The decision to retire After the third test against New Zealand.

The footage was filmed in the England dressing room at Trent Bridge before the fourth day, and was then shared with broadcasters and social media during the match that day.

By publishing the footage and audio before the end of the third Test, the ECB risked conflicting requirements in the Players’ and Match Officials’ Areas (PMOA) for international matches. The PMOA rules are designed to support anti-corruption protocols.

In response to ICC letter reports, Stokes jokingly wrote on social media that he had “made it”.

The ICC wrote to the ECB on 4 July. It is understood that the ECB has since responded and the matter has been settled amicably.

Neither the ICC nor the ECB commented.

In the ICC’s first letter to the ECB, Article 2.2.11 of the PMOA Minimum Standards was violated.

The National Cricket Federation states: “Ensure that there are no permanent or temporary video cameras or other recording equipment placed in any dressing room used by the teams for video or audio recording”.

The ICC also said that the ECB had previously been told that any footage recorded in the PMOA should not contain audio or be released before the match was over.

At the end of the fourth day, Stokes explained why the official announcement was made during the match, detailing that it was a plan between his agents and the ECB.

“I just said, ‘You work with Michael Lomb and Neil Fairbrother, who work with me, and you come up with a plan,'” the all-rounder said.

Stokes was in the middle of a bowling spell when the announcement was made at 15:25 BST and took the wicket of New Zealand’s Zach Foulkes in his first delivery since the news of his retirement broke.

The Test and Stokes’ international career did not end until the next day.
