Me he was four years old when Despicable Me it was released in cinemas and the banana colored Minions, dressed in full, conquered the whole world. When I was seven years old, my younger siblings and I were using it The Official Minion Manual teach ourselves Minionese.
Minionese is, of course, a language created by Kevin, Stuart, Bob and company, which has a combination melodic gibberish and differences in the actual word from different types of international languages. When the Gods shout “kanpai” (“cheers” in Japanese) or “para tú!” (change to Spanish “para ti”), may remind you how gen Alpha slang, which mainly consists of nonsense words like “cup” and “mogging”, also attracts international languages. Think about it Bulgarian scat the beginning of “skibidi”, for example.
In anticipation of the upcoming film Minions & Monsters, which for the first time includes a 15-minute sequence spoken entirely in Minionese, join me in breaking down the similarities between Minionese and gen Alpha slang. The next time you hear a minion yelling “bello” on the big screen, notice how Light wants it first a fun comedic device has grown up and has a habit of putting on different types of youth language.
Let’s start with Minionese lines from favorite Minions moments, many of which they have roots Spanish, English, Italian, Tagalog, Russian, French and Indonesian. One of the most beloved moments in the Minions canon is Bob’s brief stint as king of England, which ends with the queen giving Bob a tiny teddy bear crown, Tim. Bob appreciates it over and over again shout “thank you”the word “thank you” in Indonesian. Linguists classify the real world languages among the Minionese as “loanwords“.
My favorite time from Dirty Me 2 and when Dave the Minion, looking dapper, celebrates Gru and Lucy’s wedding by singing a Minionese cover of All-4-One’s I Swear, which begins with a sigh. “ah, there”. This moment is a subtle example of Spanish influence in Minionese, since the word is similar to “ah, la boda”, which means “wedding” in Spanish. From loanwords to clever Easter eggs, Minionese is a wonderful representation of the world’s languages and connects seemingly random and unfamiliar words together effortlessly.
Perhaps the most obvious bridge between the Minionese language and gen Alpha is the embrace of Italian as a language full of words that have been uniquely fun to roll off the tongue. Take, for example, the Minions YMCA cover that ends Despicable Me 2 (which, I shamelessly admit, I play all the time in my car on the way to work). This cover is full onomatopoeic wordsand sometimes “bokka linguini banaki loto” and “li le carbonara” sprinkled. The Italian dishes “linguini” and “carbonara” hidden here are an odd addition, but they definitely go together, and they make this song fun to sing along with.
It reminds me of the gen Alpha internet phenomenon Brain damage in Italya series of famous anthropomorphic AI characters with names that sound Italian, such as Ballerina Cappuccina and Chimpanzini Bananini. Linguists say A youth program in Italy, even if it is not strictly Italian, can promote cultural appreciation by promoting the music of the language. One thing is certain: to accept the Italian music and the Minionese part, one type of Alpha seems to have been influenced, even if unconsciously.
Now moving completely to gen Alpha slang, you would be surprised at the number of unfamiliar words that people shout today are, like the Minionese, from linguistic and cultural changes. One popular term for the Alpha breed is “sussy baka”, a A noun is used to call someone for unusual or suspicious behavior. At first glance, these words seem trivial – but in fact they are inclusive English “suspicious” and Japanese “baka”meaning a fool. Gen Alpha slang has its own loanwords, too, like “it’s god”which has become their brand of gen Z’s “on God“The word “wallahi” – which translates from Arabic as “I swear to God” – entered the language of the Alpha people and is another way of matching the languages of gen Alpha slang.
I have my childhood Minion diary on my bookshelf and a List of limited games I’ll be queuing up on Spotify, I’m ready for Minions & Monsters. I personally can’t wait for the minionese’s 15-minute sequel, and I hope her silly yet melodious charm resonates deeply with gen Alpha viewers. Minionese may be made, but Light speaks the language of children.
