Algeria suffered a painful blow hours before their crucial match against Jordan in the second round of the 2026 World Cup Group E when their striker Mohamed Ammoura suffered a hamstring tear, ruling him out for two weeks.
According to local media, the German “Wolfsburg” star had to withdraw from the last training held in Lawrence on Saturday before leaving for the mission to California, after feeling severe pains in the right thigh.
Medical tests confirmed the seriousness of the injury, which threatens his participation not only in the game against Jordan, but also in the final against Austria, a real disaster for coach Vladimir Petkovic, who is already suffering from a crisis of confidence after the heavy defeat against Argentina (0-3) in the opening round.
Petkovic had relied on Amoura to penetrate Jordan’s clustered defense as he planned to bring him back into the starting line-up to add pace and depth to the Algerian attack, but injury has forced him to reshuffle the tactical cards in the absence of a real alternative to match the 26-year-old forward’s capabilities.
The development comes at the worst possible time for Ammura himself, who has been looking to regain his luster and confidence after a difficult period that saw his form drop at the German club.
Notably, Algeria need a win over Jordan to keep their hopes of qualifying for the round of 32 alive after a disastrous start against Tango left them at a disadvantage in a group that also includes Austria.
