BBC radio DJ Paul Gambachini has been diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease

Veteran radio DJ Paul Gambacini has been diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease.

The BBC Radio 2 and Greatest Hits Radio presenter said in a statement: “As Freddie Mercury once sang, you can’t turn back the clock, you can’t turn back the tide. There’s no shame in that.”

There’s no denying that it’s a tough situation with an uncertain future, but for now life goes on as usual.

Gambachini, whose investigation is scheduled for 2025, said it will continue to offer both programs.

Radio 2 said it would send “our love and best wishes to Paul” and would continue to support him in his “beautifully produced weekly music show”.

“I will be as open as I can when things improve,” Gambacini, 77, said in a statement, adding that he was grateful for the kindness and support he had received in the past.

“For now, I’m just hoping it gives me a place to get more of the music I love to the listeners I love. These are the days of our lives,” he said.

Andy Ashton, content director of Greatest Hits Radio, praised Gambacini for “bravely sharing his Alzheimer’s diagnosis”.

“We know that he wholeheartedly shares his desire to continue bringing the music that our audience loves to even more listeners.”
