It strengthens the financial side of the Catalan club
In a strategic move that reflects Joan Laporta’s seriousness in tackling Barcelona’s chronic financial crisis, the club announced the appointment of banking expert Sergio Serrano as its new CFO, the official start of Laporta’s second term on July 1.
According to Spanish newspaper El Confidencial, it’s coming Serrano’s appointment is an important part of Laporta’s plan for a comprehensive economic restructuring of the Catalan club.In order to put Barcelona on a solid financial footing in the coming years.
Sergio Serrano has 25 years of banking experience in capital markets. Before joining Barcelona, he held senior positions at Banco Sabadell and played a significant role in the restructuring of the savings fund Caja de Ahoros del Mediterraneo (CAM).
Serrano will lead the club’s core financial operations, reporting directly to CEO Manel del Rio, and will also work closely with newly elected board member Ferran Ulivi, who is expected to take over as the club’s vice president of economic affairs.
One of the most pressing issues facing the new CFO is the debt restructuring of the Espai Barça project, as the club intends to increase the size of the loan provided by Goldman Sachs, after the initial financing of 1.45 billion euros did not meet the real needs of the project.
Serrano will also help increase sponsorship revenue and attract new investment as part of an ambitious plan to achieve sustainable financial stability for the Catalan club.
It is a remarkable coincidence that Serrano knows the club’s director of communications, Gabriel Martinez, as they previously worked together at Banco Sabadell during the CAM bailout crisis.
