A fierce battle to capture the owner of a difficult situation with Marseille
Mason Greenwood, one of Europe’s most popular wingers this season, faces a difficult situation at Olympique de Marseille, which opens the door for him to leave next summer.
Despite scoring 25 goals and providing 10 assists in 43 appearances for Marseille, the 24-year-old has come under heavy criticism of late, particularly in last weekend’s 3-1 defeat to Nantes, with former Barcelona striker Christophe Dugarry describing his performance as a “disgrace”.
And her former coach opened up Roberto de Zerbe The door is wide open for a move for Greenwood after he took over as Tottenham manager.
“Mason is my son in the world of football and when everyone was against him, he did everything he could for me. If the board approves the budget this summer, he will be the first player I call up.”
Greenwood has been targeted by several clubs, most notably Juventus, and reports suggest that Saudi clubs are interested in him, with his price currently estimated at around €40m.
For their part, Barcelona are keeping a close eye on the situation as they look to strengthen the wing, along with other names such as Anthony Gordon, pending the resolution of their financial issues and Financial Fair Play terms.
The arrival of new coach Habib Bey to replace De Zerbe marked a negative turning point in Greenwood’s relationship with the club, with Bey stating that there was a defensive flaw in the player’s style.
Notably, Marseille signed Greenwood in the summer of 2024 from Manchester United for €26 million, plus €5 million in add-ons, following his outstanding brilliance with Getafe, where he rebuilt his footballing reputation.
As the summer transfer window approaches, interest is growing in the future of the England winger, whose contract with Marseille has been extended until 2029.
