Barcelona begin the steps to return to Montjuic Stadium

Barcelona have already taken the first step towards finding a solution for the start of the 2027-2028 season, due to not playing at their home stadium, the Camp Nou.

Mundo Deportivo newspaper reports that Barcelona have asked the city council to make the Luis Kompanis stadium available for the first half of next season as a precautionary measure ahead of the roof installation work at the future Camp Nou stadium.

The request stems from a planning study undertaken by the club, given that one of the most complex and sensitive phases of the stadium’s renovation is scheduled for the summer of 2027.

The technical studies the club are working on show that this work will take around four or five months, a period which means the first team will have to play their matches away from Camp Nou when the official season starts.

The futuristic roof will be one of the most prominent features of the new Camp Nou stadium. The project includes a tension cable structure to protect all spectators, and at 48,000 square meters it will be one of the largest tension roofs in the world.

Furthermore, the design takes into account a firm commitment to sustainability, as the roof will include 18,000 square meters of photovoltaic panels and a rainwater collection system, according to the Catalan newspaper.

While another option still under discussion is expanding the Johan Cruyff Stadium to accommodate 10,000 spectators (it currently holds 6,000), the Montjuïc Stadium option is gaining momentum.

This expansion requires an investment of approximately 14 million euros, and the economic return will still be much lower than that offered by the Montjuïc Stadium with its larger capacity (50,319 spectators in the 2024-2025 El Clasico season record attendance).

It is noteworthy that this season “Barcelona” won the title of La Liga by defeating its traditional rival Real Madrid (2-0) in El Clasico last Sunday.
