Banning cell phones all day at school is more popular than ever

As schools across the country continue to implement cell phone bans, a new Pew Research Center survey indicates that they continue to receive treatment.

Seventy-seven (77) of US adults support banning cell phones in middle and high school classrooms, and 48 percent support banning them in schools throughout the day. This is the first time that a majority of Americans have supported, rather than opposed, the so-called bell-to-bell ban. Two years ago, only 36 percent of American adults supported a full day ban.

In all the over-18 age groups surveyed, the majority of respondents support classroom bans. That support is low but less than half of all-day bans in most age groups, except for 18-29 years, where bell-ban support drops to just 28 percent. Republicans were more likely to favor classroom and full-day restrictions, at 81 percent and 55 percent, respectively. But Democrats also overwhelmingly supported classroom restrictions at 74 percent, and full-day restrictions at 44 percent.

More than 20 states have they already adopted bans on bell-to-bell callsand early studies show different results. 1 report found positive long-term effects on student well-being, but no evidence on test results. Someone found it an increase in suspensions in the first year of the ban, which later returned to normal levels, and a decrease in unexcused absences.
