A new statue of Banksy, featuring a man draped in a flag, was this week erected in the dead of night. London.
His new work of art was seen for the first time on Wednesday, with the artist’s signature emblazoned on the base of the sculpture.
The artist, who is known for his provocative writings, took to Instagram on Thursday afternoon to confirm that the work was done by him.
The statue shows a man walking forward from the top of the tree holding a large flag, which hides his face.
Video Banksy social media posts showed the statue being dragged through Westminster on the dead of night, along with a shot of a nearby statue of Winston Churchill. In the video, a man is asked how he feels about the statue and he says “no, I don’t like it”. The video shows the statue with British flags, a Beefeater soldier and a black cabinet.
The statue is located in Waterloo Place in the St James’s district of Westminster, next to statues of Edward VII and Florence Nightingale and the Crimean War memorial.
Although he is best known for his writings, Banksy has also created sculptures, including his own name He’s drunkwhich he installed on Shaftesbury Avenue in London’s West End in 2004. It was based on Rodin’s The Thinker and was removed soon after it was built.
Banksy is recent confirmed services in London he came in December when he said he was behind a mural that showed two children sleeping and looking at the sky. The graffiti has been removed and the court said it should preserve the building’s appearance because of the graffiti.
Reuters news agency he recently said to release the artist as Robin Gunningham from Bristol, apparently confirming the findings of a similar investigation by the Mail on Sunday in 2008. Gunningham has denied this.
Banksy’s lawyer, Mark Stephens, told Reuters that the artist “does not accept that much of what is contained in your research is accurate” and said that Banksy’s anonymity was necessary because “he was subjected to persistent, threatening and extreme behavior”.
