Bad Homburg: Naomi Osaka retires during final with leg issue vs Karolina Muchova Wimbledon concerns | tennis news

Naomi Osaka’s Wimbledon preparations suffered a setback when she retired early in the second set with a foot injury in Saturday’s Bad Homburg final.

The fourth-seeded Japanese player, in her first grass-court final, was trailing 6-1 1-0 to Czech Republic’s Karolina Muchova when she withdrew.

Osaka took a medical timeout in the first set. Then, after signaling he could not continue, he moved to shake hands with Muchova and the umpire.

“I just want to thank everyone who came to watch the match,” Osaka told the crowd during the trophy ceremony.

“I apologize for not being able to finish, but the atmosphere has been incredible all week.”

The 28-year-old Osaka, a four-time Grand Slam champion, has never been beyond the third round at Wimbledon, which starts on Monday.

Seeded No. 14, she will play Elsa Jacquemot in the first round.
