While YouTube has always been a place where up-and-coming artists can be found and make it big, in recent years the platform has become the starting point for new Hollywood horror directors. The filmmakers behind the films like Talk to me, Iron Lung, and Emotions it all started when creatives posted their DIY projects online. And if it weren’t for their boosted internet popularity, studios wouldn’t have given them a shot at the big leagues.
Going viral on YouTube is a series of videos inspired by 4chan memes and posts Kane Parsons on A24’s radar and it made him director of the studio’s latest film, Back rooms. Everything about it Back rooms – from its unflinching beauty to the way its script (written by Will Soodik) leaves you in the dark about what’s going on – feels like a sign of this new generation of horror fans who grew up finding their creative voice on sites like YouTube.
In a recent conversation, Parsons told me that one of the hardest things about delivery Back rooms in the main room there was a hug that he had to tell a story that would resonate with people who have not followed his work since day one. Although Parsons knew that longtime fans could expect a deep dive into Backrooms’ art, his time on YouTube taught him that playing with a single band can be a double-edged sword.
“With videos like Backrooms that started out as YouTube projects, you have to focus on what worked in the first place to avoid creating something that’s too contrived and stiff for newcomers to enjoy,” Parsons said. “This failure story stems from the fact that most of these products are privately owned and operated by individuals. You often see ways in which manufacturers can let things affect them and the way they make things.”
As Parsons’ short – there are 22 of themand the first was raised in 2022 – Back rooms tells the shocking story of what happens when people unknowingly stumble into an extradimensional space that looks like a chaotic chaos of streets that appear to be abandoned office buildings. When a furniture dealer (Chiwetel Ejiofor) discovers the Backrooms under his failing store, he becomes curious about what the space is and why it is filled with what appear to be man-made objects. But the more time the man spends in that place, the more his understanding of reality begins to weaken.
“I wanted to make sure I replicated what worked in the first brief.”
Like some of the latest horror movies, Back rooms It can be described as a vibe-forward film that focuses more on creating confusion rather than letting you know what is happening to the characters. That storytelling works especially well for short YouTube videos that viewers can pause, repeat, and watch in anticipation of the creator’s next promotion. But Parsons felt that it was important for the film to have a strong and clear narrative space to work for the actors.
“In theory, I started from a place of wanting to capture what the Backrooms are and make sure I don’t overwhelm the audience by showing them the different Backrooms biomes that you see in my series,” Parsons said. “People who have seen all of my Backrooms videos are fine if I want to make a full movie where you don’t see the yellow papers because they understand the place very well.”
The ideas behind the studio’s decisions to greenlight projects like Back rooms it is easy to understand. Horror movies are cheap to make, and when they’re a hit, the studios can often recoup their investment (Back rooms It is said to have cost $10 million to build and is still being planned grossed $45 million in its first weekend.) When young filmmakers emerge with a larger, built-in fan base, management sees them as a safe bet. The combination of these elements is what led A24 to bring Parsons, and the studio hopes that. Back rooms it will be further proof of the dangerous ability of a low budget to dominate the box office.
In the past Back roomsDanny is the first Michael Philippou Talk to me film (results, Talk 2 Mecurrently growing) ultimately grossed just under $92 million against a small budget of $4.5 million, which Mark “Markiplier” Fischbach produced independently. Iron Lung — based on David Szymanski’s 2022 video game — grossed $50 million. while doing his job against the expensive stuff like Sam Raimi Send Help. These films are making a mark on the genre’s most popular era You of the West X list, Long legs, and Weapons has proven that audiences will flock to see low-budget horrors.
“YouTube results are not your friend.”
While Parsons acknowledges that her YouTube fame is part of what helped her get her foot in the door, growing up in the creative industry taught her the importance of keeping some distance from the online narrative surrounding her work. Before Parsons made his videos, he subscribed to trends like Film Theoristswhich gave him a deep understanding of how strong fans can be both a blessing and a curse to their creators.
“All of my experiences with the Internet have been ways that people are putting a lot of effort into social media analysis in a structured and decentralized way,” Parsons said. “And when you have a lot of people looking at the smallest detail in your story, it can create and reinforce the wrong idea where the creator sees the need to treat their fans unconditionally because that’s where the best feedback comes from.”
While the power that defines most of today’s music industry often gives Parsons pause, he still feels that YouTube is a place where aspiring artists can find their voice and hone their craft. Some of the “most talented artists” Parsons knows are “random people from Discord who are, like, 14 years old who don’t work in the industry at all, but they’re fake witches. Parsons believes the entertainment industry could benefit from using a lot of young magic, but he also told me that he refuses to “preach the blind optimism that I hear from a lot of other filmmakers who say, ‘You have a phone; anyone can be a filmmaker now.’
“About 50 percent of the people who are on the Internet now are not people, but that doesn’t change the fact that we’re all still there and I don’t think people are leaving the Internet,” Parsons said. “But the YouTube channel is not your friend. These platforms are becoming more and more fragmented, atomic, and userless, and I think it would be disingenuous to say no.”
Back rooms it’s in theaters now.
