Australia lose Bangladesh ODI series as Josh Inglis’ top order collapses in rain-hit match Cricket News

Bangladesh sealed a historic first ODI series victory over six-time world champions Australia on Thursday, as pace bowlers Taskin Ahmed and Mustafizur Rahman led the hosts to a five-wicket win in Dhaka.

Australia, who were without their injured captain Mitchell Marsh, lost to Bangladesh on Tuesday by Duckworth-Lewis-Stern’s 86-run stand, with the hosts taking an unassailable 2-0 series lead with today’s win.

Josh Inglis’ side won the toss in rainy conditions and elected to bat first, but Bangladesh’s bowlers got off to a flying start, with Ahmed and Rahman dismissing Matthew Short, Cooper Connolly and Matthew Renshaw for no runs.

Sensationally, this is only the fourth time in history that a team has lost three of its top-order batsmen without a run.

Josh Inglis steadied the ship, making 34 off 37 balls, and Alex Carey, who made 13 off 17 balls, was both dismissed.

Half-centuries from Marnus Labuschagne, who scored an unbeaten 55 off 85 deliveries, and Xavier Bartlett, who was bowled out by Ahmed, lifted Australia to 187-8 in the first innings.

The pair put on a 103-run partnership, and before Labuschagne came to the crease, Australia were languishing at 81-6.

Rahman was impressive, dismissing Connolly and Renshaw, who clipped the two edges behind the stumps, while Ahmed bowled before short, with Bartlett and Adam Jumper hitting both stumps.

Australia’s innings was cut short by rain, which lasted for nearly three hours before the players returned.

Bangladesh were set a revised target of 192 in 41 overs, and the hosts reached their target despite losing opening batsman Tanjid Hasan, who was caught and bowled by Xavier Bartlett off two balls.

Soumya Sarkar and Nazmul Hossain Shanto both scored 42 runs before being dismissed by Renshaw and Meredith respectively.

Liton Dias added 21 runs before being caught by Inglis behind the stumps, while Touhid Hriday (40) and Mehdi Hasan Miraj (22) completed the innings, as Australia’s bowlers struggled to take wickets in the conditions.
