At least one person has died in the Texas flooding near Camp Mystic

At least one person has died in flooding in central Texas – the same area where more than 130 people died in flooding last summer.

“Major and deadly” flash floods are expected to ravage the region following days of heavy rain from the Guadalupe River, the National Weather Service (NWS) in San Antonio reported. Last year’s flood was also caused by the same river.

As of Thursday morning, emergency officials were encouraging residents in the area to evacuate.

Last July, flooding killed more than 130 people, including 25 children and two counselors at Camp Mystic, an all-girls camp located along the river near Kerrville, Texas.

In an update Thursday afternoon, Texas Governor Greg Abbott announced that at least one person has died in the flooding.

“We will do everything we can to save lives,” Abbott said on social media.

He added that about 80 rescue operations were carried out and the person who was killed was not a resident of the region.

“Rapid rivers” will continue to rise throughout the day, the governor said.

The NWS has provided constant updates citing immediate danger and urging people to get to safety.

“Severe flooding is occurring. Get to higher ground now! The Guadalupe River is rising fast and will continue to rise!” San Antonio News Posted on X.

The Guadalupe River rose 32 feet (975 cm) in a four-hour period, according to the Texas Tribune.

The flooding affected several counties in South Texas, including Uvalde, Kerr and Kendall.

Video from the area shows cars driving slowly on flooded roads, the brown water reaching up to their windows. A group of deer floated with the current, stretched out to keep themselves above water.

Rescuers carried small children from the rising water in their arms as they returned to dry land.

The rain continued to drench cars parked in a residential area half in brown soup.
