So Carroll didn’t defend anything negative from Trump: instead, he accused him of insulting him and secondly of defaming him after he responded with insults, according to his political base. Both courts found in Carroll’s favor, one for $5m, the other for $83.3m, and The courts will now force him to pay the first of these.

Elle magazine, which had hired Carroll as a celebrity columnist and auntie, lost heart when the first lawsuit was filed and canceled her contract. Elle is coming out of the film as the second biggest character, although it is unclear if her editors have been approached for comment.

Trump’s biggest threat is the most interesting: in a very sarcastic way, he declared that he was “not of his type” – as if the airy statement was consistent with it. (Curiously, a photo of Trump briefly meeting Carroll with then-wife Ivana in 1987 suggests that the two women had similar looks, though each may have been influenced by 1980s New York blond brassiness.)

The case has no doubt taken its toll on Carroll, now 80: but it has been tougher than Trump and his lawyers imagined. When Trump leaves the White House in 2028, the story may not be over yet.
