Asa Tribe: England Claims With Glamorgan Batter Lions Share

If Tribe realizes his ambition and becomes the first Glamorgan player to play for England since Simon Jones in 2005, it will come on the back of his desire to pack his bags and go wherever there is an opportunity to play and improve.

He never played a game outside of Jersey until leaving the island to study in Cardiff aged 18, but joined Glamorgan on a rookie deal in 2023 before signing an extended contract last year.

Since then, his travels have taken the Tribe to the National Cricket League in Texas, while playing grade cricket in Adelaide, then a Nepal T20 competition, before being picked by the Pearl Royals to play in the T20 tournament in South Africa last winter – as well as earning a contract to play grade cricket in Australia.

With his stint with the Pearl Royals in particular bearing fruit, the Tribe was able to change its strategy ahead of the tour of South Africa.

“I’ve made a few technical changes and they’ve served me well here,” he said.

“I’m more to the side now and added a little trigger there and made sure I added a few more shots.

“So if guys are missing a little bit on the off-side, I can still punch it and I’m trying to narrow the margin for error from the bowler’s side.

“My movement is a bit more precise and accurate too.

“It gave me the ability to know what their bowlers do with the ball.

“It definitely helped me against their skilled bowlers and gave me a clue as to what they do.

“The reason we have this type of cricket where we play against second-tier teams from other countries is that it’s going to be a better standard than what we potentially face in the County Championship.

“In the Championship you talk about a bit slower bowling whereas on this wicket it had more pace and bounce. It’s a different challenge.

“I like the idea that we get to play in it because if you’re familiar with Test cricket, it’s quicker.”

Whether Tribe is on the fast track to an England cap remains to be seen, but already the much-travelled young player is doing his best to make his dream a reality.
