As measles cases in the US continue to rise, biotech companies have begun developing new drugs



Until recently, the measles vaccine has been so effective that there is no medical treatment or funding available to treat the disease.

But with measles at a 35-year high and vaccine coverage declining in the US, a handful of biotech companies and academic groups are working to develop measles treatments for infected and vulnerable populations who need temporary protection. It could be years, however, before these countermeasures are available, and it’s not clear whether those who resist the vaccine will receive the drug.

Bound by a large explosion in the South Carolina and UtahThe US had already passed 2,289 measles cases last year, and in July alone. In comparison, there were only 285 cases in all of 2024.
