“I went outside to the field, I started to light the fire. I started to cook, I didn’t see anything,” Arteta told reporters on Thursday.
After finishing second three times in a row, Arteta heard about their long-awaited success from his eldest son, Gabriel, who plays for Arsenal’s Under-18 team.
“My eldest son opened the garden gate, he started running towards me. He started crying, hugged me and said, ‘We are champions, father,'” said Arteta.
“Then my other two sons and my wife came, and it was beautiful, just to see the happiness in them too.”
Footage shared by Arsenal on social media showed players dancing and singing in their training ground after their league title was confirmed with a game to spare.
“It was their moment, and they deserve to be alone in that moment. And if I am there, I think it will never be the same again,” Arteta said.
Arsenal captain Martin Odegaard called Arteta recently, asking where the manager was.
“I said, guys, have fun for a while and see you for a few hours somewhere in London,” Arteta recalled with a smile.
This is Arteta’s first title as a manager, and he admitted to doubting himself at a time when he was at his most anxious, when he is often a breather to avoid losing to his rivals.
“Playing with that on your back all the time is not easy. This has been one of the most difficult moments… we showed the most important qualities not only in sports, but in life. Which is to work hard, to be patient, to be made when people doubt,” he said.
I asked myself that question, am I capable of leading these players to win the big cup?
Arteta said the club’s attitude had changed after winning the Premier League, giving the team confidence in the Champions League final against Paris Saint-Germain on May 30.
He said: “It changes because of how you feel, and that’s something I’ve never felt before.”
Arsenal will end their league campaign by lifting the trophy at Crystal Palace on Sunday.
“We will have a window to celebrate and lift the trophy and connect with our regulars. Then we have six days to write a new record in the football club,” added Arteta.
