Arsenal Women 1 – 0 Everton Women

Stina Blakstenius scored a controversial stoppage-time goal for Arsenal in a 1-0 Women’s Super League win over Everton.

In her final appearance at the Emirates Stadium before leaving the club, Beth Mead was thrice frustrated by the crossbar as Olivia Smith’s effort hit the woodwork twice.

However, in the third minute of added time, Blackstenius headed into the bottom corner to lift Renee Segers’ side into second place in the Women’s Super League – with a game to spare.

The goal was shrouded in controversy after Lotte Uben-Moy flicked the ball from an offside position to Leah Williamson. The situation was further complicated when the Arsenal defender pushed Everton goalkeeper Courtney Brosnan moments later.

As a result of the impact with Williamson, Brosnan was left on the ground and off his target, allowing Blackstenius to slot his effort home to secure victory.

Eiji Christiansen says Arsenal’s 93rd-minute goal against Everton shouldn’t have stood

‘Clear and obvious error’ – should Arsenal’s winner have been disallowed?

Sky Sports’ EG Christiansen:

“I’ll be upset. It’s difficult. It’s difficult to watch but Wubben-Moy is offside, it’s tight but I hope the lineman makes that decision.

“It’s the first phase. Leah Williamson is not offside but it (the contact with Brosnan) is offside; it’s a clear and obvious foul on the goalkeeper. It’s a late challenge.

“Obviously a great finish by Blackstenius. But it’s a really tough decision for Everton to digest.”

In an emotional farewell, Beth Meade left the Emirates for the final time as Arsenal fans paid tribute to the forward.

Mead: It’s an honor to play for Arsenal, I’ll miss you a lot

Arsenal ahead Beth Mead:

“I’ve been here a long time, I’ve met so many amazing people. I have the memories of a lifetime and it’s been a huge honor to play for this amazing club for such a long, long time. I’m going to miss you so much.

“It’s hard to put into words. I’ve had some of my most amazing memories here and I’ve had some of my hardest, darkest days. I lost my mom when I was here and I couldn’t have done it without these amazing people.

“I don’t think thank you will ever be enough. You guys are the best fans in the world, we love you and I love you. Thank you so much.”
