Arne Slott says the connection he shares with Liverpool and the club’s fans “goes beyond football”.
The Dutchman was sacked as head coach at Anfield on Saturday, 12 months after winning the club’s second title in 35 years, after a woeful defense saw them stumble to fifth place.
In an open letter to fans Liverpool EchoHe said winning the Premier League title was “beyond special”.
Slott wrote: “The connection we share is beyond football, beyond European nights under the Anfield lights or the sound of You’ll Never Walk Alone from The Cop.
“You made me feel welcome from the start and helped me along the way. That’s something I cherish.”
Slott said the title win was “even more meaningful” because fans were able to take part in the celebration following the 2020 title success during the pandemic.
He described the “shocking” incident when 134 supporters were injured when Paul Doyle drove into them on Water Street in the city center during the celebrations. Doyle was jailed for 21 years and six months after pleading guilty to 31 offences.
“I had the opportunity to witness first-hand your spirit of compassion and unity,” Slott wrote. “It’s a spirit that has carried this city through tough times before, and I hope that will help bring about the justice and accountability so many have campaigned for over the years.”
Slott described the “love, compassion and support shown by the Liverpool family” following the death of forward Diogo Jota in a car crash as “amazing” and the way the fans honored the player will stay with him forever.
In addition to thanking the fans, Slot paid tribute to the players, staff and club owners.
“It’s been a pleasure working with you all,” he said.
“Liverpool’s 20th league title belongs to all of us and will be an important chapter in its history. We should all be proud of that.
“I leave with full confidence in what lies ahead. Players who have given so much to this club, who have upheld its values and helped create so many unforgettable moments, have built foundations that will last.
“At the same time, a new generation is rising, ready to write its own story and take on the responsibility that comes with wearing this shirt.
“Change is part of football, but I know this club will continue to make its people proud.”
Jamie Carragher Was shocked by Slott’s sacking but believes an elite manager would have fixed Liverpool last season.
“I was torn on Erne Slott,” he said. “I would support almost any decision and I can see both sides of the argument, but this is a shock.
“I think an elite football manager, the absolute crème de la crème, could have found a way to fix Liverpool last season and make it even better, but he wasn’t helped by recruitment.
“You look at those players, did any of them do well? Only (Hugo) played well, nobody else did well. You can put it on the manager, does he need to get more out of them?
“Should those players have done more? More, yes. Should the guys above them have given them a better squad this season? Yes.
“There are a lot of people pointing the finger at where Liverpool were last season and the players who were there a year ago, the complete opposite of their performance.”
Meanwhile, Liverpool will begin formal talks with Andoni Iraola this week.
The out-of-contract Bournemouth boss is the clear frontrunner to replace Slott.
The Spaniard is in talks with Bayer Leverkusen after appearing to cool talks with AC Milan. However, in this discussion, Italian skies Iraola is reported to be open to the Liverpool job despite no vacancies at Anfield at the time.
Now it is – and Iraola has a strong relationship with Liverpool director Richard Hughes after their time together at Bournemouth.
Hughes convinced Bournemouth to sign Iraola from Rayo Vallecano in 2023. Since then he has done a remarkable job, leading Bournemouth to sixth place in the Europa League.
Iraola also has Crystal Palace as an option but they always expected him to join a bigger club – even after they won the Conference League.
Adam Butt Reflects on Liverpool’s decision to sack Slott and looks at why Iraola is seen as an exciting option to replace him; The appointment will be seen as a gamble by some but supporters want to see a major change of style at Anfield…
