Argentina’s tough stance is based on a national government initiative called Safe Stadiums. The goal of the program is to identify and punish parents who find money to attend sporting events while neglecting their children’s basic needs. Reports indicate that the list handed over to US officials includes those who owe child support and have been delayed in payments by Argentine courts in the past.
In recent months, there has been increased focus on tracking down defaulters, which happen when a required periodic payment is not made on time, and the Argentine government hopes that by sharing the list with US law enforcement, it can track down anyone with outstanding debts who is trying to attend the World Cup.
The “Safe Stands” initiative has been widely supported by the Argentine public since its expansion in 2023, and official statistics confirm that more than four million spectators have been screened during 1,328 football matches, with 1,166 arrest warrants and dozens of administrative bans issued.
The expanded list also includes those with a history of violent crimes, in addition to notifying US officials of outstanding debt holders.
National Security Minister Patricia Bulrich said. “The list includes more than 15,000 people who will be banned from entering stadiums. This is extremely important for us, because any violent person who has committed any crime in Argentina’s stadiums will not be able to attend this sporting event.”
