Archduke’s review – twisted history goes to sandwich war | Theater

MMany of us have written a story about the origin of the first world war, listing the names of the young Bosnian Serb Gavrilo Princip and the victims – the Austrian-Hungarian heir Franz Ferdinand and his wife Sophie – in Sarajevo almost 112 years ago. The answer in the books is that their killing started the war in Europe.

However, a student who answered the question about the beginning of the 1914-1918 war with fiction in Rajiv Joseph’s 2025 play Archduke, may also face a problem. Unemployed and found to be a “lunger” (eater), Princip (Stanley Morgan) receives a “job” from Apis (Marc Wootton), a Slavic patriot who recruits Gavrilo and two other starving youths, Trifco (Abraham Popoola) and Nedeljko (Chris Walley), filling their minds with their mistakes and misdeeds.
