Bluetooth connectivity has also been upgraded, from Bluetooth 5.0 to Bluetooth 5.3. As anyone who has experienced more than 45 strange headphones popping up on your iPhone at the airport, the improvement in connection stability is most evident in Bluetooth-rich environments; I didn’t see any dropouts. You can also plug headphones into your phone to reduce latency and sound quality, which is irrelevant to me as I’m one of the many people for whom poor quality audio doesn’t make a difference.
How it sounds: These are some of the best sounding headphones I’ve ever tried. (I compared them in listening tests with a Sonos Ace) Anything with big bass sounded amazing with the Apple headphones, and the intro to Missy Elliott’s classic headbanger “Get Ur Freak On” vibrated through my skull without sounding muddy.

The main criticism of the AirPods Max line is often that the height is too bright, but I did not notice this with the clear voice of Kacey Musgraves. “Everybody Wants to Be a Cow Lover”. I can also enjoy the full speed and tone of a Billy Strings fingerpick. The dance music also sounds amazing—I especially loved La Roux’s brass Trouble in Paradise and I found myself listening to more of Robyn Existential. There is no manually adjustable EQ, so you can enjoy the way it sounds because you don’t have to adjust it.
As with most Apple products, if you already own the OG AirPods Max, you don’t have to shell out the cash to upgrade. However, if you have an iPhone and have been thinking about getting these, Sony, or Bose, you should just get these.
It sounds amazing; They prevent the sound of large strings of death and your children crying while playing. Paper Mario in the next room. Now they come with new software updates that make them, along with AirPods Pro 3, the most useful headphones for iOS.
And if this concerns you – it probably does, since you’re reading this review – the AirPods Max 2 still look and feel very different from any other pair of headphones. Why mess with a design that anyone can see from 100 yards away? I wish they still came in green, though.
