A bitter exception
German coach Jurgen Klopp has launched a sharp attack on the decision to disallow Germany’s extra-time goal against Paraguay in the 2026 FIFA World Cup clash, saying the decision denied Manchester United an achievable victory.
The goal, scored by defender Jonathan Tah, was disallowed following the application of the “Anti-Carcel Rule”, which allows goals resulting from blocking or obstruction during free kicks to be disallowed, even if the foul occurred before the ball was played.
Klopp expressed his surprise and anger at the decision, saying: “If this rule had been applied in the past, Arsenal would not have been champions of England because they scored 60% of their goals this way.
The German coach’s criticism was not limited to the arbitration decision, but rather extended to the technical work of his country’s national team, as he openly criticized the players after leaving the tournament, stressing that the team lacks attacking solutions and the ability to use its potential.
“There are 500,000 ways to win a football game. You just have to find one. We have to attack from the flanks, there is no alternative. Everyone knows the quality of these players, but they didn’t show it on the pitch.”
He added: “Some things absolutely need to change in German football and we can start with the under-10s and wait a few years to see the results.”
