Anthropic rises to $965bn valuation, leapfrogging OpenAI | Technology News

Anthropic has usurped OpenAI as the world’s largest artificial intelligence startup, rising to a valuation of $965bn ahead of expected listings by rival companies.

Anthropic, maker of the Claude family of chatbots, said on Thursday it raised $65bn from private investors after a fundraising meeting led by Altimeter Capital, Greenoaks, Dragoneer and Sequoia Capital.

The announcement puts Anthropic, led by CEO and co-founder Dario Amodei, ahead of OpenAI developer ChatGPT, which attracted a valuation of $852bn in its last fundraising round in March.

“This investment will help us meet the needs we face, stay on the cutting edge of research, and bring Claude to more areas where work is done,” Anthropic chief financial officer Krishna Rao said in a statement.

The CEO of Altimeter Capital, Brad Gerstner, praised the establishment of Claude among “the most complex organizations in the world” as proof of Anthropic’s command in the project.

“This acceleration positions Anthropic to lead the next phase of AI innovation and capture the great opportunities that lie ahead,” said Gerstner.

Founded in 2021 by former OpenAI researchers, Anthropic quickly emerged as one of the leading players in Silicon Valley’s race to dominate AI.

Anthropic’s Claude, first launched in 2023, is one of the most popular AI models in the world.

In March, the San Francisco-based company said its chatbots were getting more than 1 million new subscribers every day.

Despite the success of Anthropic in the rapid period, Anthropic has also faced difficulties – in particular, a major conflict with the administration of US President Donald Trump, who called the company a “property threat” for refusing to allow the unlimited use of its equipment for military purposes.

Anthropic unveiled its latest Claude soundtrack, Opus 4.8, in an announcement Thursday, calling it a “slight but noticeable improvement” over its predecessor.

Anthropic, OpenAI and Elon Musk’s rocket company SpaceX are all expected to go public soon in what is expected to be one of the largest public offerings in history.

Jay R Ritter, a professor emeritus at the University of Florida who specializes in IPOs, said Anthropic has brought a lot of excitement to the market because of its widespread adoption by companies in software development.

“This is a huge market that obviously Anthropic has very good products in,” Ritter told Al Jazeera.

“The increase in short-term valuation is unprecedented, although publicly traded technology companies such as SK Hynix, Nvidia, and Alphabet have seen significant increases, although not enough,” said Ritter, referring to the South Korean and US chip giants, and Google’s parent company.

While it remains to be seen whether the huge investment pouring into AI is creating a bubble, Ritter said, a few successful companies expected to emerge from the field could see significant returns.

“No one wants to use the eighth product, so this company is one of the most successful companies, or they can have market share,” he said.

“The tech business is different from the restaurant business, where there’s no real economy, and where competition drives profits.”
