Andy Burnham will be brave but stick to the Labor manifesto, says Lucy Powell.


Burnham was officially announced as the new leader of the Labor Party on Friday in a short race where he was the only candidate to win the support of 379 MPs.

Some opposition parties have called for a general election to ensure Burnham remains prime minister.

“Our manifesto talked about redistributing power, it talked about reorganizing our country, it talked about taking those vested interests,” she said.

“He[Burnham]really understands the big, bold steps needed to live up to the manifesto promise.”

She said his leadership was an opportunity to “reboot” and that scrapping the digital ID system was “a small example of a reboot.”

In one of his first announcements since becoming Labor leader, Burnham said he would scrap the scheme announced by Sir Kiir last year.

Powell said the plan would have cost a “not insignificant sum” but would have diverted attention from the government’s priorities.
