Burnham’s final bid to become prime minister begins when Sir Keir Starmer officially tenders his resignation on Monday when he meets King Charles.
The king soon meets with Burnham, and the king asks him to form a government. Burnham will officially become the nation’s 59th Prime Minister as he accepts.
After leaving the meeting – which will be held at Buckingham Palace – Burnham will head to his new home, Downing Street, where he will deliver an address.
In his speech, the former mayor of Greater Manchester is expected to argue that the political stability he has previously promised should be accompanied by “realistic” reforms with “breathing room” on the cost of living.
His speech was also reported to insist on the importance of “honesty and meditation”.
Burnham begins appointing senior ministers to the cabinet; including the Chancellor’s key position.
It is unclear who the new prime minister’s top team will be, but Labor deputy leader Laura Kunsberg and Burnham partner Lucy Powell told the BBC on Sunday that the incoming prime minister’s vision would be “consistent” with the party. 2024 General Election Manifesto But it will be bolder and more ambitious.
Ahead of Monday’s speech, the incoming prime minister’s team teased some of the steps Burnham is expected to take in his first term.

A new oil and gas drilling plan in the North Sea is expected to be on the agenda, as part of a number of measures including a plan to take the Burnham water and energy companies under public control.
But environmental campaigners have urged it to go ahead with Labour’s 2024 manifesto, which promises no new licenses for North Sea drilling, saying it will not cut energy bills.
