Following its reveal last month, Google has now released Android 17 to compatible Pixel phones, including some special features as part of the June Pixel Drop. Not all features are declared besides the OS during pre-I/O Android demo available today.
Android 17 itself arrives on Pixel phones today, and Google says that other manufacturers will be providing updates in 2026. The main change to the user interface is the introduction of Bubbles, floating windows of the program that you can open with a long press – similar floating windows are already found in many Android skins, but now they are an official part of 17. Google makes them very useful for dedicated “bar” icons, under the main bars, under the bar. multitasking on foldables and tablets.
The update also includes Screen Reactions, which makes it easy to record a selfie video while recording, taking the hassle out of recording a video of a social media activity. Folders are also getting new game controls that show the game app on the screen below the display, while the game is at the top, and all Android phones are getting a controller update. Various parental controls and security features are also included in the update.
There are some new features that are exclusive to Pixel phones, though most are enhancements to existing capabilities. New Gemini Omni model will be available in the Gemini program to create a video from audio, right Lyria 3 allows you to do the same for music. AirDrop support via Quick Share is expanding to Pixel 8A and 9 AVoice Translate on phones is coming to 10Aand Take the Message it will now be available on every Pixel from the 6 onwards (except in India, where it still only has the 10 series). Finally, interactive editing in Google Photos it is growing in the UK, Germany, France, Spain, and Italy, where Magic Cue Recommendations will appear in new messaging apps — though Google hasn’t said which ones.
There are many which was announced at the Android Show which is not included in today’s release. Google says it has something new Gemini Intelligence things will get to “select advanced devices” later this summer. This should include Rambler’s writing tool, AI-generated widgets, and advanced Task Automation. Google has not confirmed that other features, such as the redesigned emoji and Pause Point tool, will be released.
