Artist Elmer Saflor, who goes by the internet name “Superelmer,” loves that millions of people have shared his “Running Away Balloon” comic since it became popular in 2017.
However, just because a lot of people have copied it, that doesn’t mean it’s safe for an AI meme generator to sell its copyrighted meme as a template for how many people know how to sell it, he told Ars. That’s why they’re fighting to stop one of the biggest meme generators that are using AI to quickly increase what they say is illegal use.

In a a case filed earlier this month, Saflor, a digital developer and artist in the Philippines, claimed that Memes Apps, LCC—which operates the platforms Memes.ai and Memes AI Studio—violated copyright laws by selling paid subscriptions to an ad generator that spits out its illegal copies without permission.
