A move used for the first time in the World Cup
A press release said today, Thursday, that the International Football Federation (FIFA) has taken an important step to overcome the arbitration dispute starting with the Morocco-France quarter-final match of the 2026 World Cup.
The newspaper confirmed.Mundo Deportivo:“Tonight’s match, which opens the quarter-final between France and Morocco, will see many important new developments in video assistant referee technology.
FIFA is working on the implementation of a new system to ensure the effectiveness of this technology during the ninety minutes of the game and, if necessary, during an additional thirty minutes.
Both the video assistant referee and substitute video assistant referee will be in attendance tonight at Boston Stadium to watch the first leg of the quarterfinals. The assistant video referee will be Leodan Gonzalez from Uruguay and the alternate video assistant referee will be Tatiana Guzmán from Nicaragua.
This procedure ensures that the technology will not be affected by any emergencies that may occur to the VAR system and the “mouse” room located at the International Broadcast Center (IBC) in Dallas.
In other words, in the event of a blackout, the VAR and substitute VAR will be on the field to make any necessary review in accordance with FIFA approved VAR protocol.
The same applies if arena referee Facundo Tello needs to review the screenshot.
It is important to remember that FIFA regulations clearly state that no match can be stopped due to a technical error in VAR. So this situation will never happen.
A match whose refereeing staff will eventually include 6 Argentines. The staff starts with the main referee, who will be accompanied by his assistants, Juan Pablo Pilati and Gabriel Chadi.
As for the fourth and fifth referees, Dario Herrera and Cristian Navarro, they are also Argentinian, and they are joined by the sixth referee, video technology referee Hernán Mastrangelo.
Notably, since the tournament’s inception, FIFA has implemented a system that requires video referees to be present at the International Broadcast Center (IBC) in Dallas, Texas, rather than inside the stadiums where the matches are played.
The entire arbitration panel sits in a unified and technically equipped center in Dallas and receives live broadcasts from all tournament venues in the United States, Mexico and Canada.
However, in anticipation of any emergency, the two referees from the video crew were moved into the stadium for the Morocco-France match in anticipation of any emergency.
