The world’s largest data center (62 square kilometers) has been approved in Utah, but opposition to the project is mounting. With the promise of creating thousands of jobs, we take a look at the bipartisan opposition to double Manhattan. In this episode, Justin and Anthony discuss the massive buildings being built in rural America, which AI companies are working with to capture massive amounts of data. Tech bosses say the centers are vital to the development of artificial intelligence. Also, for most companies now worth billions of dollars, their stock price depends on data centers that need to be approved and built. But they are bipartisan, growing from environmental impacts, water pollution, electricity use, noise pollution, falling property values, and the impact on the landscape of rural America. We hear from journalist and author Robert Bryce, an energy specialist and columnist for Substack. He has been tracking the development and opposition to data centers in the United States geographically and has interesting observations on how this compares to the development of wind and solar power.
