Federal Trade Commission paid Amazon $2.25 million to address claims that the company failed to support customers who were defrauded, as he said before and Bloomberg. In his complaintThe FTC accuses Amazon of refusing to provide customers with information about purchases made through fraudulent accounts, a violation of the Fair Credit Reporting Act (FCRA).
According to the filing, victims of identity theft who contacted Amazon “often entered into a Kafkaesque series” where the agent would not provide any information about the fraudulent account unless they provided the name of the person who opened it.
In one case, a victim tried to match the fraudulent account owner’s name more than 30 times, but Amazon says it would not remove the victim’s credit card information from the victim’s account. The FTC alleges that Amazon also failed to respond to the victims’ requests for records within the 30-day period required by the FCRA.
An Amazon spokesperson says Bloomberg that the company has “resolved this matter with the FTC” and is “putting in place additional measures for customers who believe they may be victims of data breaches.”
