THE WIRE
Amazon product spray: If you subscribe to Amazon’s Prime service, you can consume all movies, music, TV, and books; buy everything you can get with free two-day shipping; I’m looking for your free Amazon images site. You can do much of the same from an Android tablet or iPad, but the Fire OS interface is designed specifically to serve up Amazon’s products, with flexible pages for every type of media that Amazon sells.
Made “good enough”: Physically, Amazon’s Fire tablets are made of cheap plastic, but they’ve been carefully designed so that their appearance doesn’t bother you too much. Wi-Fi reception is excellent, and the front-facing cameras have improved significantly over the past few years. The Kids Editions are some of the best tablets for kids, enclosed in a sturdy bumper, and they all have microSD slots so you can add more storage. (We recommend this 128-GB microSD card for $33.) It was that you can change things and rip Amazon tablets that install Google Play Store on your Fire device. Unfortunately, installing the Play Store has become very difficult and is something I no longer recommend to many people. It’s not worth bothering about if there are other things that make sense cheap Android tablets availability.
Costs: Did we mention the price? All cost $200 or less, save for the new Max 11. If you stick to the cheaper models, it’s worth it. You can also get them with Amazon lock-screen deals, which will reduce your price by $15.
HE IS TIRED
Non-Amazon content missing: The greatest strength of these pills is their greatest weakness. If you don’t subscribe to Amazon Prime and don’t want to get video, audio, or books from Amazon, the Fire tablet lineup is pretty simple. They have Alexa, so that could be an add-on, but again, that’s very connected to Amazon’s library. You can download third-party software like Netflix on Amazon’s Appstore, but the choice is away less than what is available Apple iPad or the Google Play Store on standard Android tablets. Rumor has it that this will change this year when Amazon updates Fire OS, but for now, it’s just a rumor.
Past present: The technology inside these tablets is old. The processors aren’t very fast, and you may notice a slight lag and lack of power compared to more expensive Android tablets. Touchscreens don’t respond or feel like expensive tablets. Since most Fire OS apps are built with weak processing power, you don’t see them much. The operating system has been rewritten (depending on the Fire tablet you’re buying), which can hide some weaknesses. Amazon’s latest fire is the updated version of Android 11, which came out in 2020. Amazon continues to update its tablets to some extent, but not as often as it should be.
Short confirmations: Aside from the Amazon Kids two-year, no-questions-asked warranty, the Fire tablets don’t have much support from Amazon. Only the Fire HD 10 comes with a one-year warranty. Small appliances have a 90-day warranty.
Special offers: Over time, Amazon’s Special offers have become more visible and annoying. We recommend paying extra to buy a Fire tablet without them.
